Huntington, NY (May 12, 2013) Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing returned to professional boxing’s Long Island home, The Paramount in Huntington, New York on Saturday night with another installment of their sold-out Rockin Fights series.

“This was the eighth event at The Paramount and the fans who continually turn out in droves, each time packing the house, have really made this a special place for professional boxing” said DeGuardia

In the main event, longtime heavyweight contender Vinny Maddalone had the Long Island faithful on their feet cheering on his third round knockout of previously undefeated Richard Carmack of Kansas City, Missouri.

With crunching hooks to the body and power shots to the head throughout the first two rounds, Maddalone, 37-8-0 (27KO’s), earned the stoppage, drilling the beefy Carmack, 12-1-0 (10KO’s), to the canvas in the third round as referee Tony Chiaranto called a halt to the proceedings at the 2:57 mark.
“This was a terrific performance for Vinny and we’re looking to a bigger fight in the division in the coming months” said DeGuardia.

In the eight round light heavyweight co-main event, Buffalo, New York’s Lionell Thompson scored an upset over the returning Yathomas Riley of Augusta, Georgia. A hotly contested battle over the course of the bout, although it appeared Riley may have had a shot of winning the close rounds, Thompson, 14-2-0 (9KO’s) was declared the winner by scores of 77-75 twice and 79-73.

Returning to the ring from a three-year absence following a wrongful incarceration on a murder charge, Riley, 8-1-0 (6KO’s) suffered his first defeat as he couldn’t shake the 3 year ring rust.

Headlining the undercard, touted Huntington prospect Alan Gotay improved to 5-0-0 (2KO’s) with a thrilling performance over Brooklyn’s Bryan Acaba, earning the stoppage at the 1:58 mark of the sixth round in their lightweight bout in a fantastic fight. The valiant but outgunned Acaba fell to 3-4-0 (2KO’s) in the fight which saw celebrity guest LL Cool J enthusiastically cheering the efforts of both boxers.

In the latest James Bond film Skyfall, British actress Naomie Harris is quite cutting edge. She gives 007 (Daniel Craig) a very close shave in one intimate scene in the 23rd installment of the secret agent franchise.

Naomie uses a cut throat/straight razor to give James the shave of his live. “Sometimes the old ways are the best,” Naomie says as she shaves him with the iconic razor.

The 36-year-old has since revealed she was sent to barber shop school to practise shaving balloons to prepare for the steamy scene.

A very “close” shave for 007

Shaving with a cut throat razor is certainly one of life’s pleasures as it will give you the closest possible shave. But it does take time to master the technique and you’ll certainly need a steady hand and plenty of practice.

If you haven’t started straight razor shaving before but are keen we recommend starting with a shavette razor. Not only will this help you learn the correct technique but you’ll also save on the expensive up front costs of a straight razor and its maintenance.

The Dreadnought shavette is a razor that is similar to a straight or cutthroat razor, with the main difference relating to the fact that its blades can be changed.

If you are wondering whether you should consider one above a typical open razor, then check out the points below.

The Dreadnought shavette is a distinctive and stylish razor that is proving to be very popular at this moment in time. The key reason for this is that as the blade does not need to be frequently stropped or sharpened, it can save time for those who are in a hurry, but still want to experience the luxury of a wet shave. Therefore, the preparation time for the shave is greatly reduced when using a shavette.

Skyfall promo

As with a safety razor, the Dreadnought shavette can be fitted with disposable blades, which slide into place and can be changed from time to time. This gives the user a greater flexibility to replace the blades when required, yet still be able to enjoy the closeness of a shave you can only get by using a straight razor.

Preparing your face for a cut throat/shavette shave

The key to a painless shave is to use plenty of warm or hot water before shaving. Either have a bath, shower or use a hot flannel to soften the bristles and open up the pores of the skin.

Make sure you massage your chosen shaving cream thoroughly into your stubble or beard. Use your fingers or a decent shaving brush. For straight cut shaving to work, the lather must not be allowed to dry.

Holding and using the razor

Hold the razor with your dominant hand. Your thumb should be on the underside of the shank against the shoulder. Your index, middle and ring fingers should be on the opposite side (top) of the shank. The handle should be between your ring and little finger, with the little finger resting on the crescent shaped tang. Some people prefer to have the ring finger on the tang also, but this is a matter of choice.

Now for the shave! With your other hand, stretch the skin as tight as you can get it. It is recommended to hold the blade at a 30 degree angle to the skin otherwise you’ll get cut! A useful way of starting is to lie the blade flat against your cheek and then lift the spine to the desired angle of 30 degrees before applying your first stroke. Use very little pressure and apply even strokes with the razor in the direction of the hair growth.

Below is an example of the general direction you might want to shave using your straight or shavette razor.

Once you’ve finished with your first shave you can then rinse, relather and shave again. This time though, you should go against the grain/direction of hair growth.

When you have finished shaving, rinse the shaved area with warm water and then follow up with a cool water rinse to close the pores.

The award-winning Miguel Gutierrez, AKA, The Nomad Barber needs your help as he plans to travel round the world on nothing but his extensive barbering knowledge and the money in his backpocket.

With 10 years of barbering experience and winning numerous awards you would think Miguel would be a content man. However, his drive and ambition to learn the ancient methods of barbering will soon see Miguel embarking on an adventure into places many barbers would only dream of going.

Miguel Gutierrez – The Nomad Barber

The journey begins on June 12th 2013, ten years to the day that the Nomad Barber began his career in the world of barbering. He will fly to Turkey, the gateway of the Middle East, to begin a pilgrimage over 12 months to uncover the secrets and history of barbering and male grooming worldwide.

His aim is to work with and learn from fellow barbers in over five continents, discovering how a trade, which dates back to 3500 B.C., varies across the globe. Traveling on a budget by land, sea, or flight – this is truly a trip of a lifetime.

Miguel, commenting on this exciting adventure, said:

“I’ve been told by so many clients over the years that my trade is something I could take anywhere in the world. I’m now really excited to be able to put this to the test. The truth is, everyone needs a haircut.”

“Since being awarded American Crew UK’s Men’s hairstylist of the year in late 2012 I have been overwhelmed with the support I have received from the vast community of barbers across the globe. I hope that this trip will allow me to unite barbers from very different walks of life.”

The Journey is being part funded by co-sponsor and clipper manufacturer WAHL and also via a crowd funding campaign on Kick-starter offering haircuts internationally to raise enough cash to take a professional cameraman with him.

Make his dream complete by sponsoring him today, anything from £1 to £500 will make all the difference in helping him get the project of the ground – http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1288453887/the-nomad-barber?ref=live

The Bluebeards Revenge was lucky enough to meet Miguel a couple of months ago and are in no doubt you will be hearing a lot more about this guy over the next year!

In January, the site’s readers were asked to nominate their favourite shaving cream brands and aftershave products. After a nomination period that saw a flurry of activity, four finalists were chosen in both categories. From February 11 through March 17, 2013, readers cast tens of thousands of votes every day via the About.com website.

Dreadnought scooped 65% of the public vote, followed by Taylor’s of Old Bond Street Lavendar shave cream and then Art of Shaving’s unscented shave cream.

“We are overwhelmed not only be nominated but also win such a prestigious and coveted award. To poll 65 per cent of the vote and beat competition from Truefitt & Hill, Art of Shaving and Taylor’s of Old Bond Street is a huge achievement,” said Justin Bullock, PR manager at Dreadnought Shaving.

“The competition that we beat are world renowned brand names with stacks of illustrious history compared to Dreadnought, which only came to the American market last year. This makes our achievement even sweeter and shows that the US has really taken to our unique shaving cream”.

“I would just like to take this time to thank everyone who voted for us – it means so much to all here at Dreadnought!”

Following a surge in cut razor sales with the release of new James Bond film, Skyfall, leading men’s grooming brand Dreadnought have released a handy how-to film to ensure their customers know how to get the best out of their cut throat shave.

The short film, which has been made in collaboration with Jacks of London, is, of course, spy inspired by the film, and is full of top tips for the customer to achieve the correct technique when using their shiny new cut throat shavette razor.

On the film’s cinema release, which included a saucy shaving scene with actors Daniel Craig and Naomie Harris, Dreadnought was inundated with demand of people trying to learn the art of traditional shaving and the cut-throat razor, because like Harris says; ‘sometimes the old ways are the best.’
Shaving with a cut throat razor is certainly one of life’s pleasures as it will give you the closest possible shave. But it does take time to master the technique and you’ll certainly need a steady hand and plenty of practice.

Dreadnought wants to ensure the customer really gets the best out of their buy so have put the film together to teach men how to get the best shave and women, how to give the best shave.
The handy shavette razor is similar to a straight or cut throat razor but is a more cost effective alternative and requires less maintenance as it uses changeable blades, meaning no stropping or honing. It can save time for those who are in a hurry, but still want to experience the luxury of a wet shave.

The Dreadnought crew visited Jacks of London’s upmarket London barbershop to film the clip and resident Barber Sandra Morgan showcases her skills and talks you through the key elements and process involved when guaranteeing a great shave.
These include the correct way to prepare your face for a cut throat/shavette shave, holding the razor in the correct way, shaving in the right direction and after care for your skin when the shave is complete.

Justin Bullock, Marketing Manager for Dreadnought, said: “We’ve had lots of customers wanting to ‘get a razor like Bond’ – it’s opened up the idea of cut-throat shaving to a whole new group of guys.

“Hopefully our cut throat shaving video will not only entertain, but it will also ensure men all around the world are clean shaven, and not stirred.”

Electrogent takes a picture of the Dreadnought Shavette

First of we think a bit of blurb about Electrogent is warranted, as we here at Dreadnought have been massive fans of the website for quite some time. Founded in 2011 the site features superb original content on not just men’s grooming, but also Arts, Careers, Manliness, Style and more. We highly recommend checking out his articles on ‘Rules for my future son’ and ‘Argue like a man: Understanding logical fallacies’.

Last week Electrogent hosted a Dreadnought day which featured 3 product reviews, including our new cut throat razor. On using the cut throat, Electrogent says, “The shave itself is fantastic, and I have no real complaints there. I’ve had a few shaves with this bad boy now, and I haven’t cut myself yet. It’s definitely slower on the flat parts of the face (around your cheeks), but it is so much better than safety razors around the curved parts of your face (your chin and neck). It might just be a personal preference, but I tend to cut my chin easier with a safety razor than with this cut throat razor”.

We highly recommend going to check out Electrogents website by clicking HERE. He has even been picked up by the publication Details to write for their Style Network which you can see HERE.

HUNTINGTON, NEW YORK (February 24, 2013) Saturday night in front of a standing room only packed house of Long Island fight fans at The Paramount and a nationally televised audience on NBC Sports Network’s FIGHT NIGHT, The Fighting Pride of Huntington, New York, Chris Algieri won the biggest fight of his pro career, capturing a ten round dominant decision over Jose “Mangu” Peralta of Jersey City, New Jersey in their junior welterweight bout.

“It was an electric evening and I’m very proud that once again Star Boxing was able to show the boxing world on this nationally televised broadcast the rich talent we have on Long Island” said Joe DeGuardia, President of Star Boxing. “This was our seventh straight sellout at The Paramount where the fan and media support has continued to be tremendous.”

“Chris Algieri truly shined in the biggest win to date and we look forward to a very big 2013 for him. And the rest of our young stars on the Star Boxing team, Cletus Seldin, Issouf Kinda and Alan Gotay are to be commended for their terrific performances.”

Using an excellent array of pinpoint jabs, blistering left hooks and powerful overhand right hands, Algieri controlled the action throughout the fight against the game but outgunned Peralta.

Scores at the end of the action filled ten rounder were 98-92, 97-93 and 96-94. With the win, Algieri stayed undefeated with a record of 16-0-0 (7KO’s) while Peralta moved to 10-2-0 (6KO’s).

Fighting for the sixth time at The Paramount, Cletus “The Hebrew Hammer” Seldin scored his eighth straight knockout victory, stunning the crowd at The Paramount by stopping New York City’s Jonathan Cuba with a massive overhand right, which quickly stopped the action.

With the win Seldin improved to 11-0-0 (9KO’s), while Cuba fell to 6-5-1 (4KO’s).

In a scheduled eight round junior welterweight tilt, Issouf Kinda knocked out Phoenix, Arizona native Javier Loya in the second round, dropping him twice before the bout was halted.

Continuing to impress the Long Island fight fans, Kinda improved his undefeated record to 16-0-0 (6KO’s), while Loya’s record hits 7-2-0 (2KO’s).

In a four round lightweight bout, Huntington, New York newcomer, 22-year-old Alan Gotay improved to 4-0-0 (2KO’s) with a unanimous decision win over Cincinnati’s Micah Branch, now 1-4-1. Scores were 38-37 on all three scorecards.

Also featured on the card in the NBC Sports Network FIGHT NIGHT main event, Philadelphia’s Malik Scott, 35-0-1 (12KO’s) and Vyacheslav “Czar” Glazkov, 14-0-1 (10KO’s), battled to a ten round draw. Scores were 98-92 for Scott, 96-94 for Glazkov and 95-95.

UNCASVILLE, CT (February 16, 2013) In front of a packed electric crowd, former world title challenger Delvin Rodriguez put the deeply talented junior middleweight division on notice Friday night with a dominating performance over game George “Comanche Boy” Tahdooahnippah culminating in a sixth round stoppage.

Fighting in front of a packed house of loud and proud boxing fans at the Mohegan Sun and broadcast live on ESPN Friday Night Fights, Rodriguez sixteenth appearance on the iconic series, the scheduled ten rounder was all in the Danbury, Connecticut native’s hands as he blistered the brave but outgunned Tahdooahnippah with power shots from the opening bell utilizing pinpoint precision with either hand.

After five plus rounds of Rodriguez’s continuous assault, referee Eddie Cotton called a stoppage at the 2:41 mark of the sixth round stanza.

Dreadnought ring girls

Now 27-6-1 (15KO’s), the 32-year-old Rodriguez’s win was confirmation for promoter Joe DeGuardia of Star Boxing who is looking ahead to a big 2013 for the popular East Coast fighter.

Delvin really stepped it up and he showed the skills and fire of a man on a mission to create another title opportunity for himself he looked fantastic and a performance like this in front of a huge, supportive crowd shows me that the Delvin Rodriguez is a player again in the jr middleweight division, said DeGuardia.

“This win should put him on the fast track towards a bigger fight hopefully in the New England area.”

The always-classy Rodriguez spoke afterwards of his dedicating the fight to the Sandy Hook Elementary School of nearby Newtown, Connecticut and the meaning of the tragedy to the father of two children.

The loss was the first for Tahdooahnippah of Lawton, Oklahoma, moving his record to 30-1-1 (23KO’s). Tahdooahnippah showed tremendous heart which was appreciated by the numerous native Americans in attendance.

In the scheduled ten round televised co-main event, 24-year-old lightweight prospect Chris Howard drilled veteran Bayan Jargal to the canvas in the third round as referee Danny Schiavone called a halt to the action at the 1:46 mark of the stanza as the game Jargal beat the count but was in no shape to continue.

With the win, Cincinnati, Ohio native Howard improved to 15-2-1 (7KO’s) while Jargal of Arlington, Virginia fell to 17-4-3 (11KO’s).

Impressive junior middleweight newcomer Enver Halili of Bronx, New York dominated Hartford, Connecticut’s Antonio Marrero over four rounds to earn a shut out decision victory by scores of 40-36 X 3.
